NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2009
Classic, Children, Live on Stage
The Sound Museum starts into the New Year with an extensive programme
The statistics speak for themselves: more than 2500 visitors on New Year's Eve during the New Year´s Eve Trail, Vienna's traditional New Year's Eve event, and over 200,000 visitors throughout 2008. Interest in the Viennese Sound Museum remains as high as ever. We also succeeded in significantly increasing the number of MemberCard holders during the last year.
And Haus der Musik has plenty of exciting events planned for 2009 as well: a new installation is being developed for the "Futuresphere", which will represent a logical continuation of the Haus der Musik philosophy - giving people an opportunity to encounter sound and music, creatively involving its visitors and introducing people to music.
Haus der Musik will also be making a contribution to Haydn Year 2009 and, in addition to its permanent exhibition, we will be showing items on loan from the Haydn Haus in Eisenstadt. The successful "Live on Stage" concert series will continue with an even busier programme. In cooperation with the Vienna Songwriting Association, "Live on Stage" has been developed into an important platform for young artists and artists who are just getting established, playing an important and dynamic role in Vienna's music scene.
One aspect of Haus der Musik's activities that we regard as particularly important is introducing children and young people to music. Our cooperation with schools will therefore be intensified during the coming year and our programme of events for children expanded even further.
![]() | The New Year's Day Concert all year round. Haus der Musik will be showing the highlights of the famous concert in a specially designed room.
The CD and DVD of the traditional New Year's Day Concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic - this year featuring Daniel Barenboim's acclaimed New Year's Day debut - were issued by Decca just a few days after the event. These recordings are once again expected to become bestsellers this year. A special version has been put together for Haus der Musik that will be shown on the hour every hour in the Vienna Philharmonic Museum. |
![]() | From Lorelei Lee to Esteban's The Live on Stage agenda for the first few months of the year promises highlights and rarities.
The series kicks off on 15 January with a label night in cooperation with Cracked Anegg Records, who present Lorelei Lee, SiE and Fred Eisler. Marilies Jagsch will perform in February and in March, there will be a Live on Stage Special with Mondscheiner, which is expected to generate a great deal of interest among the public. Also in March, the quartet Velojet will be making its debut at the Sound Museum. Finally, in April, we welcome Esteban's with a perfect mix of the avant-garde and the popular. |

He is capable of thrilling not only classical music fans but also those who would not normally go out of their way to listen to so-called "serious music". Lang Lang, the Chinese "wunderkind" and million-selling recording star, talks to Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, about his popularity and personal views of music. Lang Lang's latest CD, of Frédéric Chopin's piano concertos, was issued last November. |
![]() | A New Year's Concert for children Marko Simsa and Johann Strauss: 9 January 2009
What Daniel Barenboim is to adults, Marko Simsa is to children. He guides his audience vividly, thrillingly and amusingly through the "King of Operetta's" classics and involves children in the proceedings in his own inimitable way. A rarity for himself and a bestseller for the Sound Museum. |
![]() | Musical adventure at the Sound Museum Bernhard Fibich and Marko Simsa with new concerts: 13.1. and 23.1.2009
Bernhard Fibich has rapidly established himself alongside Marko Simsa as a second crowd-puller for children at the Sound Museum. His audience participation concerts are enjoying ever-increasing popularity. He will introduce a new programme entitled "It's Anna's Birthday". Marko Simsa will also be appearing once more in January with Bombo, Poncho and Guitar, a concert centred around Latin-American folk music. |
![]() | Hot tip: George Braque, picture, composition and creativity Compositions in Picture and Sound: a collaboration between Haus der Musik and Bank Austria Kunstforum on 05.02.
The George Braque exhibition at Bank Austria Kunstforum is one of the most important and best attended exhibitions currently on display in Vienna. This is the first time for many years that a representative sample of the work of this great French Cubist has been shown in Vienna. A must for all those interested in art and music. Kunstforum and Haus der Musik have devised a delightful event for children called Compositions in Picture and Sound, on 05.02.2009. |
