THE 150TH BIRTHDAY OF HUGO WOLF
In an intimate special exhibition, Haus der Musik explores the Spanish works of Hugo Wolf.
Hugo Wolf's oeuvre includes a curious amount of references to Spain. Wolf's idea of Spain - a country he himself never visites - was based on the romanticised notion of Spain prevalent north of the Alps at the end of the 19th century. A famous work in this context is the Spanisches Liederbuch, after Emanuel Geibel and Paul Heyse. Two of Wolf's opera projects, "Der Corregidor" and "Manuel Venegas," were inspired by Pedro Antonio Alarcon y Ariza's works.
Wolf's compositions lack topics of Spanisch folklore, "Manuel Venegas" however seems to have been inspired by authentic photography of Spanish lands and people. It is the first time that thsi material, drawn from the Wolf estate archived at Wien Museum, will be presented to a broad public. The exhibition also features documents from the Wienbibliothek in Vienna City Hall.
The special exhibition on Hugo Wolf's Spanish works will run from June 15 through November 5, 2010 at Haus der Musik and forms part of Wienbibliothek's main exhibition "Hugo Wolf zum 150. Geburtstag."
