A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA
The HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA invites its visitors on a musical journey. On five levels, music becomes audible and visible in real and virtual rooms. Infotainment, edutainment and entertainment – these three principles pervade the HAUS DER MUSIK. Experience and adventure are linked with each other both in an impressive and enjoyable manner.
• The Ground Floor
The centre of the building is the roofed, air-conditioned inner courtyard with a small room in which special exhibitions are shown free of charge. The inner courtyard is surrounded by a number of businesses dedicated to music: The violin maker Anna Hohenegger has her workshop here, instruments, high-value HiFi institutions and the café Huth invite you to linger and relax.
• The First Floor
The VIENNA PHILHARMONIC MUSEUM is located on the first floor in the former state rooms of the Palais, in which the orchestra with the unique sound presents its history. Here you do also find the newest attractions of the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA: the fascinating, interactive “Waltz-Dice-Game” and “The New Year's Concert Experience”, which shows, in excellent tome and picture quality, the highlights of the world famous New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic every hour on the hour.
• The Second Floor - Sonosphere
Let your ears take a stroll through the amazing world of tonal and sound phenomena.
In a “prenatal sensory rush”, visitors relive their first musical experience many years after their birth. In the Instrumentarium, they discover larger-than-life instruments in the Sea of Voices the voice as the most natural musical instrument. A long aisle leads from the Instrumentarium to the Polyphonium, a place of excellent surround sound to relax in. Adjacent to it, there is the Sound Gallery, in which noises and sounds from the fields of microcosm and macrocosm, enviroment and the human body are listened to individually and are being mixed with one's own voice and well known melodies to then be recorded on a CD with the Evolution Machine. For this unique listening experience, the latest mixed media and multi media installations, special exhibition items and computer simulations have been developed.
• The Third Floor – The Great Masters of Viennese Music Tradition
Vienna’s worldwide reputation as a city of music has been primarily shaped by the musical genius of some renown composers. Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss, Gustav Mahler, the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern – all of them are introduced in their contemporary environment on the history level through historic documents, models, costumes, modern installations and presonal items. Films and databases provide the focus of the setting and intensify the edutainment experience.
• The EXODUS, an artistic installation, remembers musicians that were forced into exile or murdered during the Second World War.
• The Virtual Conductor
Have a go at conducting the Vienna Philharmonic! Each visitor has a chance to do this with the Virtual Conductor. The musicians obey the visitor, follow the tempo and rhythm of the baton. They are happy to reward him / her with applause. However, the orchestra’s patience is not without its limits.
• In Virtual Vienna, a vitual tour of the city, each visitor can pay a visit to the musical haunts throughout the city and you may even enter some of them.
• The Fourth Floor
Music between present and vision – Futuresphere
What could the future of music and music-making possibly be? The Brain Opera presents the latest developments by the MIT - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - exclusive to the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA. The Brain Opera was invented and composed by Tod Machover, Professor of composition at MIT, Media Lab, Boston, USA.
Visitors can create music themselves and become co-shaper of the future. The tones and moods that they create by interactively playing the amazing hyper-instruments of the Mind Forest through their movement, their touch and their voice, are stored and blend with other visitors' ideas into worlds of sound. Composing and making music is possible even without previous knowledge of music.
Musical souvenirs, amusing, interesting and practical items are offered in the HAUS DER MUSIK Shop as a souvenir following the visit and completion of the 4th floor.
